#MyYearFor
I'm looking forward to giving a year of my life to do what I can to help cure cancer and to help fellow cancer patients feel better. Feels like my life was always leading up to THIS point NOW. What about you? What are you willing to give a year of your life for or to? Tweet your answer to @ScentTrail and use #MyYearFor and I will curate responses in here (or somewhere LOL).Expanding Free Consulting In 2013
Most readers of ScentTrail Marketing know I am a cancer survivor. I head to UNC tomorrow for my monthly check in. Being a cancer survivor helps you see life differently.
I wanted to accomplish two things after hearing cancer and my name in the same sentence: ride a bicycle across America and create a foundation to honor my parents and help cancer patients, doctors and administrators. Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer achieved what was behind Door #1 and we are making great progress on Door #2.
2013 Giving Back And Giving Away
My goal for 2013 is to give as much TIME, MONEY and LOVE away as I can. Here is how I plan to achieve that goal:
- Create the Story of Cancer Trust from my savings and possibly contributions from others (companies and foundations not people) to honor my parents, brother and sister and help cancer patients. Mission of the trust will be to fund technological innovation to help cure cancer, and create community and support for cancer patients and their families.
. - Contribute every dollar I make in 2013 into the Story of Cancer Trust. I live next year on what I have in the bank now (so the end of the year will be PB&J and ramen noodles LOL).
. - Continue to offer Free Internet marketing consulting Saturdays most Saturdays from 11 to 2 at Saladelia in Durham (read more about this idea here and watch @ScentTrail for when I will be at Saladelia from 11:00 to 2:00). We've had great sessions with old friends and new. Hope you can have lunch with me one Saturday soon.
. - Open Office Hours & Free Lunch Fridays From 11:00 to 2:00 at Atlantic BT in Raleigh - My brilliant boss, Jon Jordan CEO of Atlantic BT, buys us all lunch every Friday. Inspired by Chris Heivly's open office hours at Triangle Startup Factory I will have open office hours every Friday from 11;00 to 2:00 at Atlantic BT.
Anyone can stop by, but if you want to be included in our lunch let me know you will be stopping by no later than Wednesday (email Martin.Smith(at)AtlanticBT.com and please put Office Hours in the subject line). Please email or tweet if you are planning on stopping by at lunchtime so I can be sure to be here.
Friday's open office hours will concentrate on helping startups create content strategies to assure success. Chris and the Startup Factory can help with seed rounds and funding. I will be glad to help with content marketing, SEO and storytelling.
Find my bona fides on LinkedIn and here is an excerpt from startup entrepreneur George Stevenson after a Free Internet Marketing Consulting Saturday:
December 4th Note at UNC Cancer Center
Checking into UNC Cancer Center today for my quarterly checkup I saw a great use of Story of Cancer Trust funds. The checkin process at UNC Lineberger takes almost twenty minutes. The medical records technician must hand write across four paper forms, their computer screen and use a stamp. SURELY there is a better way to get my information into UNC's computer system.
When I asked about this system several visits ago the technician explained, "They've been working on it for years. It is an internal system." I imagine the "invent it here" crowd won and much to UNC's harm. Amazing how you can sit in a state of the art cancer center and watch turn of the century data management.
This is because big donors love having their names on buildings. Buildings seem to escape time's arrow. Name on a building is forever where no one will know the millions in savings and better experience across thousands of patients by fixing a data management problem. Data management isn't sexy.
Except to me data management is sexy (lol). The Story of Cancer Trust will help create systems that raise more money for cancer research, help backend data management and seek ways to help cancer patients, doctors, administrators and researchers.
December 6th Note: Why Not Charging For Services?
Had an interesting conversation today about charging for services on the first post about Free Internet Marketing Consulting Saturdays. Here is that conversation:

It was a great session, Marty is one of the smartest people I know in his field of Internet Marketing, and all things related. He is very generous, and I had at least a half dozen good tips that I need to implement. You will always come away with a larger to do list when you spend time with Marty.

If you're an expert in your field there is no reason why people shouldn't pay for your knowledge. Some experts choose to publish books or manuals, while others create training materials and physically go to companies to educate their staff. When building out a service keep track of your process. Make sense of your research and create easy-to-follow steps on best practice. With the right information and knowledge there's no reason why you can't build a training deck and offer it as a service.

I agree with Runaway Fox but they are missing my point a little. Yes I charge $350 an hour for my services most days of the week. I am well compensated for the hard work I put in.
But I choose to give away some of my time too as a form of give back. I'm actually giving back to ME too since I meet new people and learn new things.
Like all great gifts my Free Internet Marketing Saturdays and now Open Office Hours Fridays is mutually beneficial. I may even get the better part of the deal since people come into my orbit who couldn't afford the regular price and so teach me NEW THINGS I can productize and market at $350 an hour.
Mostly I created Free Internet Marketing Consulting Saturdays and Open Office Fridays (recently added find out more here: http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/12/more-free-internet-marketing-consulting.html
Thanks, Marty
